Sigur Rós's Valtari Blanket: An Icelandic Wool Classic, Now Made by Varma

Quick summary: The Sigur Rós Valtari Blanket is a 100% Icelandic wool throw inspired by the artwork of the band's 2012 album Valtari. The current grey edition, featuring the album's floating ship motif in red trim, is made by Varma and sold through Sigur Rós's official store, measuring 130 x 190 cm.

A Blanket With a Long History

The Valtari Blanket has been part of Sigur Rós's merchandise lineup for over a decade, tracing back to the release of their sixth studio album, Valtari, in 2012. The blanket's design draws on the album's cover art — a hazy, dreamlike illustration by Jónsi's sisters, Lilja and Inga Birgisdóttir, featuring a ship suspended in fog.

Early editions of the blanket were hand-woven in small batches by Farmers Market in Hvolsvöllur, a wool workshop in south Iceland, and sold out within hours each time they were released. Those runs became sought-after collector's items among fans, passed around resale and vinyl-collector communities for years afterward.

The Current Edition, Made by Varma

The blanket now sold through Sigur Rós's official store is produced by Varma, Iceland's long-running wool factory based in Garðabær, operating since 1926. This grey colorway keeps the same visual DNA as the earlier releases — the Valtari ship rendered in wool, set against muted grey tones with red trim — while shifting production to Varma's factory.

Made from 100% Icelandic wool and measuring 130 x 190 cm, the blanket carries the same natural warmth and durability that's defined Icelandic wool goods for generations, tying the band's decade-old artwork to a manufacturer with an even longer history in Icelandic textile craft.
